Singing tuition

Jo’s philosophy of singing teaching is based upon the following ideas:

Singing is for everyone. Everyone can sing who wants to sing.

Singing involves the whole person: their body, their mind and their spirit.

Singing is an expressive and creative activity.

Jo uses a variety of pathways for her teaching with particular focus on breathing technique, vocal technique, memorisation skills, language skills, acting techniques, creative visualisation, and postural skills.

Typically, a lesson will focus on one concept which is explored through exercises and repertoire. Jo focuses on one concept per lesson which enables the concept to be readily understood by the student and builds technique steadily and quickly, step by step. Lessons can be half-hour, 45 minutes or an hour in duration, depending on the student’s needs and budget. Most students aged from 14 years find that a 45 minute lesson best suits their needs. Lessons are occasionally videotaped for the student to keep, so that they can track their progress.

The studio also holds small concerts for students to try out their repertoire and performance skills, with one large concert each year for all students to perform in. Students may sing solos, duets and small ensembles and may participate in a massed choir.
